Yeah, we're getting sick of hearing this...we know our daddy isn't deployed right now, but he's still not here, and it's hard for us to understand.
Deployments are awful; we know that. But, if one more person tells us, "At least he's not deployed," we're going to scream. To an 11 month old and a 2 1/2 year old, Daddy isn't here; it doesn't matter where he is. He's not home. He's been gone for a long time (in our standards), and he's not going to be back for awhile.
And, we're tough on Mommy, regardless of where Daddy is. Right now, she's trying to get the house all ready to sell it. It goes on the market right after Easter. Plus, neither of us are into naps; we boycott them, so that makes for a pretty long day for Mommy. We're up by 7 AM, no naps (not for lack of trying....Luke might squeeze a 2o min one in, but you wouldn't know it with all the running around we make Mommy do during that time), and we're in bed by 7:30 PM...then, Mommy cleans up the house and works on the "selling the house" project for the evening.
So, please, know that when Daddy is away, it's no fun, whether he's deployed or not. Toddlers really don't understand the difference.

That must stink to hear that a lot. I am sure most people mean well by the sentiment but as you mentioned, toddlers do not understand.
TDY's, long trainings and other events cause a family to miss a soldier and adjust to him/her not being around. I think people who say "at least he is not deployed" are trying to say "we're happy you don't have the extra stress of worrying about his safety."
So, while him being TDY is 'better' than being deployed, as you mentioned, to a toddler there is no difference. Hang in there :) We're looking forward to seeing you all soon!
I also wanted to add that I would hear "at least he isn't in Iraq" all the time. Try telling that to the eight families in our unit who lost loved ones. Grrrr.....
